San Francisco - on August 25, according to foreign media reports, two people familiar with the matter disclosed that the United States has approved suppliers' license applications worth hundreds of millions of dollars to allow them to sell chips for automotive parts such as video screens and sensors to Huawei.
The report mentioned that generally speaking, automotive chips are not sophisticated, which reduces the approval threshold. A person familiar with the license approval disclosed that the U.S. government is issuing licenses for automotive chips that may have 5g functions and other components.
A Huawei spokesman declined to comment on license related issues, sources said. However, the spokesman said, "we are positioning ourselves as a supplier of new parts for smart connected vehicles. Our goal is to help automotive OEMs make better cars."
It is reported that in 2018, Huawei made it clear that it would not build cars, but help car enterprises build good cars. Previously, Xu Zhijun, vice chairman and rotating chairman of Huawei, said that Huawei plans to cooperate with three auto enterprises to build three auto sub brands.
On the evening of May 15, 2020, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it requires those overseas manufacturers who produce chips for Huawei to sell to Huawei only with the consent of the United States as long as they use American semiconductor production equipment.
On September 15, 2020, the new US ban on Huawei officially took effect. Manufacturers such as TSMC, Qualcomm, Samsung, SK Hynix and Meguiar stop supplying goods to China according to the ban, unless they are specially licensed. Companies wishing to continue doing business with Huawei must first obtain a license issued by the U.S. government.
In November 2020, chip giant Qualcomm has obtained a license to sell 4G chips to China. In addition to Qualcomm, Intel and AMD have obtained licenses from the U.S. government to provide computers and server processors to China.
From the perspective of enterprises issuing licenses in the United States, Qualcomm, Intel, Microsoft and AMD are all American enterprises. On the contrary, TSMC, MediaTek and even Samsung have not obtained free shipping licenses in the United States.
It should be noted that Huawei has not obtained the purchase license for 5g chips. With the construction of 5g network and the popularization of 5g technology, according to the current market situation, Huawei's current situation is still very difficult.
